Where you've fallen down a little, is that while you could install current versions of GarageBand and iMovie, there is no current version of iPhoto as it was superseded by the launch of the Photos app. More specifically, iPhoto was discontinued in April and has not appeared on the Mac App Store since. Instead, what you need to do is use the Photos app. By default it should be on your Dock, but if it isn't you should be able to find it within your Applications folder. Ok so here's what you gonna do. Find your old iPhoto with a cross through it, right-click it and select 'show package contents'. A folder will open. Click on the one called 'iPhoto' and terminal will open.

Leave terminal open until you are finished with iPhoto, because if you close terminal, iPhoto will close with it. Hope it works. You can close terminal once you close iPhoto. I also suggest backing up your iPhoto library while you can. Download it from the App Store as Matt suggested. You may have to move the current version to the Trash Bin don't delete yet , go to the App Store and look for iPhoto 9. It will be free. If it was iPhoto 7 08 or earlier you'll also have to download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1. Cannot update my iPhoto after upgrading to Yosemite. Can no longer use iPhoto after upgrading. I get a message that this update is not available for this Apple ID because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled.
